Supporting healthy buildings and homes through Soil contamination testing, reporting & removal

Book Free Soil Appraisal

What causes soil contamination?

Land contamination is commonly caused by factors such as herbicide residue from spraying orchards, lead pipes, hydrocarbons from buried fuel tanks, and old asbestos from buried buildings.

What are the effects of soil contamination?

Soil toxicity affects the health and safety of workers digging down through asbestos or lead, delays in laying foundations while soil is removed, issues with dumping soil, future water potability, costs of contaminated soil removal, and harmful toxins digested by tenants through vegetable gardens.

Benefits of contaminated
soil removal

  • Know if soil is safe to be moved
  • Avoid future costs and project delays through doing due diligence before your build
  • Avoid hefty non-compliance fines
  • Demonstrate a responsible attitude towards worker safety and future tenant health
  • Be informed of risks so you can factor any time delays and removal costs into your build budget & schedule

What is considered
contaminated soil?

The National Environment Standards have guidelines on what are considered safe levels of a range of toxins including lead.  Worksafe and Ecan issue fines of up to $50,000 if you have knowingly moved contaminated soil.

Soil testing - How to test your soil?

Mark Fleming at Oceania Environmental is the soil sampling expert. He will organise a soil contamination test, write the report and if required, arrange for contaminated land remediation. Mark can also certify soil and provide a certificate - if it’s clear - so your soil will be accepted at waste depots.

Who we work with

District Councils, universities and the Defence Force are loyal clients. We work predominantly in the South Island, in Christchurch, Dunedin and Queenstown but enjoy travelling.
From landfill, commercial building, fuel and chemical storage sites to demolition projects and smaller soil removal and remediation projects, such as burnt out sheds or garages, we will support you through all stages of the project to ensure that the site is remediated safely, cost-effectively and thoroughly in order to meet current regulations.
There are several different remedial solutions available. Our assessors have proven experience in deciding the right solution for a range of soil remediation scenarios. All soil analysis is done by IANZ accredited laboratories.
